- About -
Marcus Tomford is your average human teen, with the only thing truly setting him apart from others being his connection to the supernatural. He was very young when the being known as Matthiaos first came into his life, ghosting into his room while he was asleep, looking for the perfect subject to become his next victim as he did in Autophobia. At a whim he chose Marcus for both his young age and his innocent nature which would, in his own words, prevent him from contemplating suicide as an escape from his mental torment. In a way he was correct, as the early exposure ensured that Marcus adapted to his presence and never once did turn to the path of suicide, no matter how much Matthiaos's nightmares pushed him.
It would take several years until "Matt" would first make an entrance in his life. It was a spur of the moment meeting, with Marcus's face bleeding and bruised as he was kicked into the dirt by a trio of upper-classman bullies, unsatisfied by their short-changed protection money and looking to make an example of him for everyone to notice. To him at the time Matt looked to be some guardian angel, his figure cloaked in the alleyway light, raining justice and vengeance upon his evildoers in the form of a gravel-based stoning for the ages.
Yet the aches in his arms, the cuts on his hands, and the blood on his sleeves as he returned home that evening were something he couldn't explain. All he could remember was Matt. All he could remember was how he was saved, and how they laughed the experience off at the arcade covered in cartoon bandages from head to toe.
He would not remember the true retribution he helped wrought beneath the stoning's innocent and biblical veil.
He would not remember how the largest rock he could find fit like a glove in the palm of his hand. He would not remember as he smashed it down against his classmate's young and fragile skull. He would not remember beating it down over and over again until blood pooled in the dirt and the boy's eyes fluttered shut. He would not remember the thud of his foot against another's chest, and the crunch of small, fragile fingerbones cracking beneath his heel as he stomped on the skinny one's hand. He would not remember the sound of the shortest attempting to run and how he hit the ground so perfectly when that thick, lumpy stone smacked against the back of his head.
He would not remember the screams.
He would not remember the pleas.
All he would remember were the looks of fear upon their faces whenever they passed in the hall. All he would remember is the pride in his chest as his former enemies never hurt him again.
All he would remember was Matt, and how he first made himself at home in Marcus's everyday life.
As Marcus grew older he eventually made himself many new friends, namely a self-proclaimed punk named Aiden and his much younger sister named Annie. Marcus, Aiden, and Annie would stay as friends all through middle school and their early years of high school until, in Marcus's sophomore year, Aiden's house was set on fire and his long-time friend died in the resulting inferno. With the loss of Aiden his contact with Annie was also cut short, that is until a year later when Annie's face came back around in the news, with the both of her foster parents dead, caught in another mysterious house fire that left only her alive. Marcus, seeing his opportunity, stepped forward and had Annie adopted into his family, feeling that would have been what Aiden would have wanted him to do.
Live continued since as usual for Marcus. It wouldn't be until his senior year in high school that his life would once again turn entirely upside down, resulting in the chaos and carnage that was centerfold in Dementophobia. Shortly after the events of Dementophobia he mysteriously disappeared, taking Annie with him into the darkness...
It wouldn't be until several more years that the three of them would eventually resurface and rejoin the modern world, but time and exposure to the world of the surpernatural will have changed them all forever.

- Powers and Abilities -
Darksense
- Marcus's connection to the shadows allows him to "feel" that which treads in surrounding darkness; while Marcus is at least partially submerged in surrounding shadows he can sense with fair accuracy any and all living creatures within those shadows.
- This power only works to a point, as his senses dull the farther a target is from his body.
- If a target is not within surrounding shadows, or if their shadow does not connect with a nearby one, he cannot sense their presence through this manner.
- Marcus can fully manipulate the shadows that surround him within a given area. This includes changing their shape and size, forming them into solid or semi-solid appendages / masses, forming them into bestial or otherwise inhuman puppet-like creatures, and using them to smother and suffocate his prey. He has greatest control over his powers when he controls his shadows' movements with physical gestures.
- Using the already surrounding darkness to his advantage, Marcus can choke out surrounding sources of light to further strengthen and concentrate his abilities, including the snuffing out of candles and fires, the interruption of nearby electrical currents/waves, and the short circuiting of battery-powered electronics.
- Marcus has the ability to communicate telepathically with his daemon companion. When submitting a person to his mental manipulation he can also sense the innermost thoughts and communicate with his victim.
- One of the strongest tools a daemon can possess is the ability to alter a creature's perception of the world around them. Marcus uses this power to trap his victims and opponents in worlds of his own making, where they cannot perceive nor use their surrounding environment to their advantage, and they cannot escape. Within this world he'll then take advantage of their weakness and either killing them off within it or slowly torture them for such extended periods of time that they end up either killing themself or dying from exhaustion.
- An extension of mental hallucination: Marcus is able to manipulate the dreams of those he possesses, creating fantastical worlds of hyper-reality, bliss, and/or terror. He is able to distort his victim's perception of time itself, using their unconscious state to completely drain them of their mental stamina and their emotions. With this ability he can break his victims minds, kill them in their sleep, or trap them in a deep coma.
- The lingering aura of a daemon corrupts that of the human they possess. The longer a human lingers amidst a daemon, the more their mind corrupts, inhibitions releasing, and they slowly give in to their deepest and darkest innermost desires. This corruption can be fought if the human has a strong enough will and conscious awareness of its effect, but daemons can also force this corruption along if they so desire, making it more difficult to overcome.
- With enough force, this corruption can be used to effectively break a victim's mind, causing them to lose all perception of reality and their own actions, turning them into a zombified shell that can do little more than breathe and moan.
- Trivia -
- Marcus's pact with Matt has slightly altered his physical appearance: where his natural eye color was once described as an aquamarine color, it is towards the end of the story described as a grey-green, with flecks of gold surrounding the pupil.
- This color change reflects that of Matt's human form, as he has the same eye color, and the gold flecks are also reflective of his natural eye color.
- Marcus is described to be prematurely greying, and the cause is insinuated to be due to the extreme stress and trauma of Matt's possession over such an extended period of time.
- The dark bags under his eyes and his self-described insomniac tenancies are also likely to blame for the same reason.
- While Marcus frequently describes himself as being afflicted by several "phobias" it's likely that the vast majority of them are not actually accurate. It's insinuated that Marcus's deep interest in human psychology and his overtly paranoid nature cause him to hyper-fixate on said mental conditions and by extension apply those conditions to himself, in turn worsening his fears of the world around him and strengthening his nightmares.
- However, according to Matt's analysis in Autophobia Marcus does in fact have some genuine phobias that afflict him. These being:
- Venephobia: The fear of veins or arteries
- Trypanophobia: the fear of syringes
- Asthenophobia: the fear of fainting and weakness
- Dementophobia: the fear of insanity
- However, according to Matt's analysis in Autophobia Marcus does in fact have some genuine phobias that afflict him. These being:
- Marcus's unofficial birth year is 1996, which being that he was 18 during Dementophobia means that the story likely takes place in the year 2014.
- 2014 was also the same year that the infamous Slenderman Stabbing occurred.
- Marcus got a facial redesign in 2019 shortly before he and Matt's official reference sheets were made. This redesign is based off the likeness of the youtuber Charlie White aka Cr1tikal, which was inspired by a joke where while he was growing out his hair he was said to look just like Marcus.
- This redesign is said to be his appearance as he grows older into his early 20s/college years while his original, more youthful appearance is more accurate to his age during the events of Dementophobia.
- In the same respect Marcus's voice claim (Corey Taylor) was also based off a joke where Marcus was described as being able to do a perfect death metal voice should he perform karaoke.
- This redesign is said to be his appearance as he grows older into his early 20s/college years while his original, more youthful appearance is more accurate to his age during the events of Dementophobia.

- About -
Matthiaos is an immortal, eldritch being of indeterminable origin that has existed for many thousands of years. He doesn't gain any nourishment from any typical sources of nutrition, instead he exclusively feeds on the spiritual overflow exuded by all living creatures: their emotions. While he can gain nourishment by sapping energy from bestial creatures, he prefers to hunt and possess humans the most, as they are one of the world's most expressive creatures and their emotions are the most widely diversified.
While most bestial creatures can take note of his pretense, his physical form cannot be seen nor heard by most typical humans; the only humans that can usually see his form are those that he possesses or those that have the ability to see spirits. Matthiaos often takes advantage of this, using his powers of mental manipulation to craft intricate worlds that seamlessly allow him to live and take part in their daily lives. Matthiaos likes studying his prey, learning about them in every aspect: what they like and dislike, what they love and hate, and most importantly what they yearn and fear. He uses all these aspects, as well as reactions he gains from his present experiments, to create even more elaborate and realistic mental playgrounds for his future victims. When he's not actively taking part in manipulating the lives of his victims he likes to study the world around him, through local and global news, historical and artistic texts, and occasionally sitting in on plays and performances.
Though Matthiaos mostly cares little for the lives of his victims, there is a part of him that strongly craves the companionship of another being in his life, and this craving is only further exacerbated by him being unable to be recognized when he's not actively possessing a human victim. Through many centuries of chasing after his victims, bending them and breaking them left and right, he began to grow bored of the repetitive slump in which he'd caught himself. He longed for a perfect victim, someone that wouldn't seek to end their life due to his torment, someone that he could invest himself in fully and lose himself in the act of playing a part in their life.
It was here that he first met Marcus Tomford, and shortly after the events of Autophobia would transpire.

Shapeshifting
- Matt can shift and change his entire appearance at will to suite whatever it is he desires, be that of an animal, a person, an object, or an abstract creature. He can also change his physical sex to whatever he desires to experience at the time (though his usual default/preferred gender is that of a masculine/male identity).
- Matt's ties to the darkness are stronger than most, and in a sea of perfect pitch-blackness he can still see everything around him perfectly.
- Matt's connection to the shadows allows him to "feel" that which treads in surrounding darkness; while Matt is at least partially submerged in surrounding shadows he can sense with fair accuracy any and all living creatures within those shadows.
- This power only works to a point, as his senses dull the farther a target is from his body. This radius is far greater than Marcus's and he is able to sense targets in this way for great distances.
- If a target is not within surrounding shadows, or if their shadow does not connect with a nearby one, he cannot sense their presence through this manner.
- Matt's primary tool of choice: he can fully manipulate the shadows that surround him within a given area. This includes changing their shape and size, forming them into solid or semi-solid appendages / masses, forming them into bestial or otherwise inhuman puppet-like creatures, and using them to smother and suffocate his prey.
- Using the already surrounding darkness to his advantage, Matt can choke out surrounding sources of light to further strengthen and concentrate his abilities, including the snuffing out of candles and fires, the interruption of nearby electrical currents/waves, and the short circuiting of battery-powered electronics.
- Matt has the ability to communicate telepathically with those he possesses. If he focuses he can also sense the inner thoughts of those that surround him (within a certain radius).
- One of the strongest tools a daemon can possess is the ability to alter a creature's perception of the world around them. Matt uses this power to craft intricately crafted worlds that can perfectly reflect reality, allowing him to seamlessly exist within the mind of his victim without him appearing out of place from those around them. On the other hand, he can also craft perfect nightmares that torture the very depths of his victim's soul, and can leave them stranded in such an environment until he sees fit.
- An extension of mental hallucination: Matt is able to manipulate the dreams of those he possesses, creating fantastical worlds of hyper-reality, bliss, and/or terror. He is able to distort his victim's perception of time itself, using their unconscious state to completely drain them of their mental stamina and their emotions. This ability he usually uses to consume their emotions and sustain himself, but with this he can also break his victims minds, kill them in their sleep, or trap them in a deep coma.
- All daemons inherently have the ability to possess any and all living or non-living creatures: using their bodies as puppets and controlling them to do as they please for as long as they desire. Partial possession refers to this temporary control of the non-daemon's body and then eventual relinquishment of control back to the body's original soul. Full possession refers to the complete takeover of the body without any intent on eventual relinquishment. Full possessions are usually performed when a daemon's physical form is broken in an effort to protect the daemon's soul from further damage.
- In Matt's case he can partially possess Marcus's body in order to help him focus and strengthen his powers, or to force him to perform actions he otherwise would not do.
- The two of them can also perform a unique form of possession they call "fusion", where both of their souls merge into and control a single body to further strengthen their individual powers. The result of Marcus and Matt's fusion-possession is a being known as Marʞïaas.
- A daemon's body needs not nutrition in the same way a human does; food for the soul is more important than food for the body. Daemons feed off a creature's life force, which can be forcefully taken through consumption of the soul or can be leached from the human through consumption of their emotions (ie: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, etc).
- Daemons claim that all emotions have different flavors, and each daemon has their own preferred taste!
- The bond which ties that of a daemon to that of a human, a Pact, is seen as the strongest possible bond between both individuals. When a Pact is formed between a daemon and a human their souls are metaphysically bound together for as long as they both shall live. Other such effects that may occur when this bond is formed include:
- Heightened Senses: A heightened sense across all human senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound).
- Superhuman Durability: The power of the daemon's magic infusing with human flesh allows the human to take blows that would otherwise be fatal to experience. Also results in the human gaining heightened speed, stamina, and strength.
- Physical Changes: The human in question may experience physical changes that reflect that of their daemon companion, this may be as subtle as a change of eye or hair color or as drastic as the development of elongated fangs, horns, spines, tendrils, multiple eyes/mouths, tails, etc.
- Power-Sharing: The powers of a daemon are made available for that of the human to harness. The stronger the bond between them, the stronger the power of the human's abilities become.
- Pain Split: A common side effect when the bond between daemon and human strengthens; pain and pleasure of the physical and metaphysical kind are shared between both bodies (ie: if the daemon is shot with a gun, the human will experience the gunshot in the same place with the same intensity, but without the actual wound). If their bond continues to strengthen eventually this shared pain will result in the sharing of physical damage (ie: with the same example as before, but now the bullet wound and damage of impact appears on the body of the human as well).
- Being born of a higher, more powerful and more twisted eldritch power, Matt has possesses the ability to completely bend, warp, twist, distort, and destroy the fabrics of reality at will. Across his true form are seven mouths that speak in seven tongues: six sing songs that can ravage and ruin all forms of life, while the final, seventh song carries the power to end all life across a planet (and possibly even greater). Though despite the weight of these songs for most of these powers he's still too young, inexperienced, and weak to yet harness without effectively destroying himself in the process.
The Seven Songs of the Apocalypse he possesses are:- Paranoia (Primary mouth), Open
- Insanity (Base of tails), Open
- Greed (Upper gut), Closed
- Decay (Lower gut), Closed
- Wrath (Left palm), Closed
- Corruption (Right palm), Open
- Doom (Combined tails), Closed
- Trivia -
- Matt's full true name is Matthaios Ng'aphandle.
- Matt's favorite flavors of emotion is fear and panic. His second favorite is determination, and his least favorite is embarrassment.
- Matt is described to possess co-dependent tenancies which includes, but is not limited to, being unable to survive without another's energy, loss of the ability to function normally, fixation on surrounding himself with others, obsession with finding the "perfect victim" (or perfect companion), and his overprotective nature toward his victims. These symptoms are alluded to by the name of the prequel's title being autophobia: the fear of being alone.
- Matt's human form was inspired by that of a character by the same name from the anime/manga series Death Note, with his color pallet reflective of his fandom coloration (red hair with a black and white striped shirt). His nickname is also indicative of the Death Note character's alias "Matt".
- When asked the inspiration of his human form Matt would say his intentions were something "distinct, recognizable, and easy to pick out in a crowd; he'll always be sure it's me, and always know he's not alone whenever I'm in the room."
- When asked the inspiration of his human form Matt would say his intentions were something "distinct, recognizable, and easy to pick out in a crowd; he'll always be sure it's me, and always know he's not alone whenever I'm in the room."
- Matt's "true form" is partially inspired by the likeness of the furry musician Adraen of Lapfox Trax / Halley Labs, telltale features being that of the long, curved horns, jawbone spikes, and horned, rhino-like nose.
- The long spikes on the back of Matt's true form are "wing stumps" where he manifests large wings with which to take flight. Indicative of this feature are a set of secondary pectoralis muscles on his torso, which control the wings when they are manifested.
- The patch of scales on the chest of Matt's true form is described as "corruption in physical form".
- With Matt's species the more deeds he commits committed out of pure spite or malicious intent the more his external body "hardens and grows cold", which is reflective of his true inner nature. This manifestation cannot be stopped or reversed once it has begun, but it can be prevented by ceasing the actions that caused the growth's development.
- By the partial development on Matt's chest it's clear that he has committed such deed in the past outside of that he must do in order to survive but then at some point stopped. This deed could be when he partially possessed Marcus's younger self in Autophobia and forced him to attack the boys that were stoning him, or it could be from an earlier, unseen event.
